OUTtv Announce New Drag Competition ‘Call Me Mother’
June 3, 2021
Three Houses. Three Drag Mothers. One Winner
Drag Mothers are renowned drag performers: Peppermint, Crystal and Barbada
Call Me Mother, a new and unique drag competition, produced by Go Button Media and RedFlame TV will debut this fall, exclusively on OUTtv, Canada’s only and the world’s first LGBTQ+ network.
The unscripted reality series, hosted by Dallas Dixon (Entertainment Tonight Canada) features drag mothers Peppermint, Crystal and Barbada as they adopt and mentor the next generation of talent into their Drag Houses. Contestants will battle it out over the course of 8 weeks for the title of ‘First Child of Drag’ and a Grand Prize Package valued at approximately $50,000.
Competing drag artists will vie for a place in one of three houses and for the opportunity to be mentored and coached by a renowned drag performer. The Season One houses are: Peppermint’s House of Dulcet, Crystal’s House of Glass and Barbada’s House of Harmonie. Each week, the houses will compete as a family in a series of challenges, with the mother of the losing house ‘cutting the cord,’ thus eliminating one of her own family members from the competition.
“I’m excited to join the cast of Call Me Mother, I can’t wait to see what fresh talent Canada has to offer. I’m particularly interested in exploring drag that doesn’t have as much mainstream representation,” said Peppermint, Call Me Mother Drag Mother.
“Call Me Mother is a Drag Show like no other. It doesn’t feel at all like a competition (even though it is), but more like a big family. Everyone is incredibly friendly; everyone loves each other; everyone wants to help everyone,” said Call Me Mother Drag Mother, Barbada. “It’s also a very diverse show that includes people from across the LGBTQ+ community and truly represents what the drag community is, I feel honoured to be part of it.”
“I’m so excited for people to watch Call Me Mother! I loved filming the series and I can’t wait for viewers to meet our gorgeous, adopted families. Viewers can expect warmth, humour, diversity, lewks and bucketloads of talent. You’re going to DIE!” said Crystal, Call Me Mother Drag Mother.
“It’s our mission at OUTtv to representation, as broadly as possible, our audience through our programming. From the initial stages of casting, we shared the same vision with Go Button Media and focused on showcasing the variety that drag has to offer,” said Philip Webb, COO of OUTtv. “We were overwhelmed not only with quantity of applications for Call Me Mother, but by the diversity of talent that applied. Drag Queens have found a home in the mainstream, but there is more to the art form and we are thrilled to be putting a spotlight on different forms of drag artistry.”
“Call Me Mother flips the script on the competitive format and focuses on the relationships, stories and collaborations that are part of being in a Drag Family. In keeping with the dynamic and supportive cultural history of these houses, instead of artists going head-to-head – they will battle it out together as a house full of rising drag legends, each led by one iconic Mother. That is until the end – when there can only be one winner.” said Natasha Ryan from Go Button Media.
The full list of contestants will be released later this year. Call Me Mother will air on OUTtv and OUTtvGo later this fall.
